Behind-the-Wheel Lessons for Senior Drivers

The AAA Minneapolis Driving School has expanded their offerings to include in-car instruction, also known as behind-the-wheel training, for adult drivers ages 60 and over.

AAA Minneapolis Driving School’s Senior Driver Improvement Program (SDIP) classroom instruction helps drivers understand and adapt to declines in sensory, physical or cognitive areas due to aging, illness or injury. SDIP also helps familiarize adult learners with today’s in-vehicle technologies.

Evidence shows that classroom instruction improves a driver’s knowledge but it does not significantly change driving habits by itself. The best results come when a driver combines classroom instruction with on-road, behind-the-wheel training. Offering more than classroom insurance discount classes (which assist our members and the general driving public) simply makes the most sense for our guests and members.

What can participants expect from behind-the-wheel coaching?

One-on-one instruction begins with an introduction to the driver education vehicle. Then, basic vehicle skills are observed while driving. Emphasis is placed on the top five riskiest traffic situations covered in our SDIP classes.

Note that behind-the-wheel coaching is not an assessment tool to prove roadworthiness. Instead, it’s aimed at helping each driver to handle today’s traffic situations with more confidence and skill.
