Encouraging traffic safety
What would a world without traffic safety look like? I shudder to think of it. Millions in this country commute to work. Traffic safety impacts everyone’s life, every single day. That’s why it’s important to start traffic-safety education at a young age.
AAA developed a contest that not only educates children about the importance of traffic safety but educates the community as well. The Traffic Safety Poster Contest invites all students who participate in the AAA School Safety Patrol program to enter by submitting one hand-drawn poster representing safety.
This is the second year AAA Minneapolis has sponsored this contest, and we received nearly 65 submissions from 20 public and private schools, almost doubling the amount of submissions received last year.
The posters were judged on creativity, clarity, originality, connection to safety and how well they persuaded others to exhibit traffic-safety practices. All the posters were displayed and voted on by AAA Minneapolis employees.
Three winners were selected to win four all-day passes to Nickelodeon Universe at Bloomington’s Mall of America. Ten posters were selected to be produced as an informational coloring book, which also includes two crossword puzzles.
“Some students love to draw and create,” said Pat Stacken, AAA School Safety Patrol group advisor at Alice Smith Elementary. “I think the contest is important because safety patrols have been trained and taught about safety. It gives them a chance to show what they have learned.”
To continue spreading the message of traffic safety, the coloring books were distributed to more than 30 businesses, such as pediatric hospitals, dentist offices, day cares and more, throughout Hennepin County.

It’s grilling season! But before firing up your grill, consider some important information and tips from AAA for safe summer barbecues.
For the first time, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare will be able to negotiate the prices of prescription drugs. The negotiations with participating drug companies will occur in 2023 and 2024, and any negotiated prices will become effective beginning in 2026.
It began with a meeting on Nov. 5, 1947. Six AAA board members and staff huddled at Washington, D.C.’s famed Mayflower Hotel to forge something new. One of AAA’s primary missions since its founding in 1902 is keeping roadways safe. With the surge in people and cars in the United States during that time, AAA knew it would need to expand its traffic safety efforts.
AAA recommends advice given by medical and pharmacy professionals regarding medications and driving be vastly improved and more consistently emphasized to maximize safety.
